• A rest day from running, what else to do but walk and bird 🙂

    Eurasian Blackbird

    Female blackbird

    Common Chaffinch

These are apparently uncommon now, I guess due to autumn migrations. This is a non-breeding male, which apparently do not migrate outside of their breeding grounds.

    Female Mallard

    Nala

Disgruntled at my excessive amount of time spent looking at birds

  • Recent birbs

Tis sometime since I posted, and thus I have plenty of photos.

    Magpie

See these so often and often ignore them, but this is perhaps not fair. They are pretty birds, and apparently one of the most intelligent in the world.

Kingfisher at the natural history museum

    + kunsthal display

    Pidgeons

    hello there

    Blue Tits

    Carrion crow

    Mid blink

    Na;a etc

  • It has been a busy time for me, filled mainly with socialising (my worst fear), and so I have not had a lot of time for birding.

    Great tit

Only a rearview shot of this little guy

    Lesser Black-backed Gull

    Eurasian Blackbird

A very blurry photo. It was quite raining, and this wee bugger was moving quite quickly.

I believe this one to be a Juvenile male, almost into adulthood.

    Here is him flying away…

    A second, more mature, Blackbird

Much crisper photo, but much darker.

    He prepares for flight

I say he, not out of misogynistic tendencies, but because I believe females are brown and have spotted chests.

    A second great tit

In the paddock near my house.

I think their foot slipped in the last photo 🙂

    Some Greylag Geese

    Pair of Gadwalls

    A couple Cormorants

    Grey Heron

I’m starting to think these guys should be called Grerons

    Juvenile Common Moorhen

    Another Greron

    Magpie

    Bro be yappin

    Nala + misc

Partner + Nala + take photo of me taking photo of them

    The neighbours cat

  • The last few days have been filled with hobbying for me. Both birding and miniature painting. Here are some of the birds.

    Great tit

Perched on the tree outside my house

    Grey Heron

    Family of Egyptian Geese

I hate that my nemesis may breed, but I must admit, their ducklings are very cute

    Eurasian Blue Tit

This was a lifer for me 🙂

    European robin

    Caught bro yappin

    Cooten

    Eurasian Hobby

Another lifer! Also, speaking of Hobbies, and this guy shows up. I can’t tell if it is eating something in the first two photos… Merlin says it catches insects and birds in the air and “eats them on the wing”, which I assume means “flying”, hard to tell.

This is a type of falcon. Very very beautiful bird.

    Nala 🙂

  • Long-tailed Tit

Took me a while to identify as the most common species of Long-Tailed Tit look quite different (white faces).

This seems to be the A. c. europaeus from the europaeus group (which contains like 9 subspecies??) and is common to western Europe.

Which seems to be found in these locations normally. (I have no idea why there is one pixel in the urals)

Merlin has been identifying the call of this species for a few days, but this was the first one I have positively identified. Yippee!

    Common Chiffchaff

These are very common in the area, you can hear them all the time.

    Together

Busy week, and no much time for birding (alexander, please, if you will)

  • Sunday birbs

    Common Wood Pigeon

I much prefer Rock Pigeons, but they aren’t very common here right now for some reason (at least I am not seeing them)

    Common Chiffchaffs European Goldfinches

I initially thought these were Chiffchaffs, but the red in the face of the below bird made me think Goldfinch. Those without red are likely Juvenile Goldfinches. Google lens agrees, so I’ll go with that.

    Parakeet

I believe these animals have become more and more common in European cities as people brought them as pets. They are apparently tough competition for native bat species.

    Grey heron

    Old reliable, the Great Cormorant

    Common Chaffinch

From the tree outside my apartment. A pretty little bird. I could be wrong in this identification.

  • Kralingse Bos

Birds are hard to see, who’d have thunk it.

    European Robins

My first attempt at capturing a robin. I quickly learned they move, and fall out of view, very quickly

According to Merlin, these things are uncommon, but I heard them constantly, heard being the operative word. Now a game of spot the robin:

I find focusing on these manually to be very difficult, perhaps I will improve. I am unsure if autofocus would be better or not, given how quickly they relocate, and how well they blend in.

    Coot, Coots, or Cooten?

    Great Cormorant

    Great Cormorant gang rise up

    Grey Heron

    Great Tit

I think these guys eat berries or something? Incorrect, they are likely foliage gleaning for insects.

    <isc etc

    the typo remains

  • Around the park and back again

A lunch break walk with Nala, a very light rain following use throughout.

    The Egyptian Goose, my nemesis

I believe these guys generally congregate in families, of which I believe there to be several living around my local pond.

    Juvenile Eurasian Moorhen

    A couple of Great Cormorants

It turns out my friend is not a lone, and may not ever have been the same bird every day. Alas, it is good to see he has company.

I believe I spotted 6 Cormorants on my walk today.

    A disappointing end

Spotted a swan, some Gadwalls, and a Moorhen, but no good photos.

A Moorhen, and a pair of Gadwall

I believe this is a female Gadwall, followed by her partner.

    Nala, etc

  • Concrete park

I arrived home from the office. The dog, of course, needed a walk. Her proficiency with the bike has improved recently, so we went for a cycle instead. We passed through the local park on the way back.

Grey heron and some Greylags (and a Nala)

    A Cormorant, and some others

They are a regular of this pole, seemingly there most days

    With a Great Crested Grebe

    A set of trees

Two trees caught my attention due to the song coming from them, one with leaves, the other without.

I am unsure as to the species of all of these, perhaps they are the same.

Perhaps they are all Goldfinches. I can see some yellow on this birds wing, perhaps a juvenile.
